Phil Mickelson
Phillip Alfred Mickelson was born in San Diego, Ca. June 16, 1970. He is one of the best professional golfers in the world. Phil was given the nickname “Lefty” because he has a left-handed golf swing, while being otherwise right-handed.
Phil learned to play golf at an early age by watching his father and mirroring his swing. He played golf at Arizona State University where he was given a scholarship for golf. While at ASU he had great success as an amateur golfer in the United States.
He became the “face of US amateur golf” when he won 3 NCAA individual championships and 3 Haskins Awards as outstanding collegiate golfer. He earned All-American honors all 4 years of his collegiate career becoming only the second golfer to do so. He was the first left-handed golfer to win the US Amateur title with his win in 1990. He also became the fourth player in PGA history to win a PGA Tour Tournament as an amateur by winning the Northern Telecom Open.
In 1992 Mickelson made the decision to turn professional after he graduated from ASU. As a professional Mickelson has 37 PGA Tour wins. He won 3 major championships including the 2004 Masters, the 2005 PGA Championship, and the 2006 Masters. He has also won 2 FedEx Cup events; the 2007 Deutsche Bank Championship and the 2009 Tour Championship.
In early 2009 Phil’s wife was diagnosed with breast cancer leading Mickelson to take a short hiatus form golf. His mother was also diagnosed later in 2009 leading to a second short absence from the Tour. He came back to win the 2009 Tour championship as well as the WGC-HSBC Championships.
