Ian Poulter

Ian James Poulter was born it Hitchin, England, in 1976.  He has risen to become one of the world’s top golfers, playing on both the PGA Tour and the European Tour.

Poulter started playing golf at age 4 when his father, a single-handicap golfer, cut one of his 3 woods and gave it to young Ian.  Poulter became the assistant pro and shop manager at the Chesfield Downs Golf Club after he was unable to get a spot as head golf pro at any private club.

In 1996 Poulter, age 19, turned professional.  He got his first win in 1999 at the Open de Cote d’lvoire on the European Tour.  He was promoted to the European tour later that year by his work in the qualifying school.   In 2000 he was named the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the year with a win in the Italian Open.  Poulter has 9 wins on the European Tour and 1 win on the PGA Tour.  His most prestigious win came in 2004 when he won the “tour Championship” Volvo Masters.

Clothing choice is something that has brought Poulter notoriety.  He is known for his sometimes-radical dress.  He claims his inspiration is his mother, who was a manager for the Dorothy Perkins fashion chain.

He often chooses bright colored pants that match his shirt, hat, glasses and shoes.  His choice to wear a jersey from his favorite team led to a rule change to ban future players from wearing football jerseys. Poulter started his own clothing line, Ian Poulter Design, in 2007.
