Ernie Els
Theodore Ernest Els, better known as Ernie Els, was born in Kempton Park, just east of Johannesburg, South Africa. He is one of the top professional golfers in the world. Sometimes he is known as “The Big Easy” because of his smooth golf swing and his large stature. Ernie Els is a former world No. 1.
Els learned the rules of golf when he was a caddy for his father, Neels. He started to play and in a short time was better than his father.
Els won the Junior World Golf Championship in 1984, interestingly enough, Phil Mickelson took second place to Ernie Els that year. A few months after turning 17 Els won the South African Amateur Championship, becoming the youngest winner in the history of the tournament.
After winning the South African Amateur Stroke Play Championship he went professional. Els won several professional tournaments on the Southern Africa Tour and went on to win his first major championship at the 1994 US Open held at the Oakmont Country Club. Since his first major championship win at the US Open he won a second US Open in 1997 held at Congressional Country Club, and the British Open, also known as The Open Championship in 2002 at Murfield. Els also took second in both the 2000 and 2004 Masters and third in both the 1995 and 2007 PGA Championships.
Because of his outstanding talent in golf, Els has gained many sponsors over his years in professional golf. Some of his sponsors include: Footjoy, Titleist, Golf Digest, Omega, SAP, Rockroller and Wentworth.
