The Masters Tournament
The Masters is a professional golf tournament played in the United States. It is often referred to as The Masters or the US Masters. It is one of the 4 major championships on the PGA Tour. It is played in the first full week of April and is the 1st of the 4 major tournaments to take place each year with The US Open, The British Open and the PGA Championship following later in the year.
The first Masters Tournament was known as the Augusta National Invitation Tournament and was first played on March 22, 1934. The present name was given to the tournament in 1939.
The Masters Tournament is easily recognizable by several traditions. Green jackets are given to the winner each year; sadly the jackets must be given back to the clubhouse after a year. Also the winner of the Masters is invited to participate in all of the subsequent major tournaments for the next five years.
The Masters is an official stop on the PGA Tour, thus the prize money won in the Open by PGA Tour Members goes toward their total on the money list.
The Masters Tournament is always held at the same location. It is played at Augusta National Golf Cub in Augusta, Ga.
