Woods continue with changes, putter swaps

On Tuesday at the Old Course, Tiger Woods was flooded with questions about his marital status, personal life and his comportment. Later on news about the change of putters by the world’s No. 1 golfer did rounds in the media.

Woods has gone more than 11 years with the same make and model, although pro golfers are known to junk putters on a whim whether it be daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly.

His switch is obviously big news in the golf world.

In fact, for Woods throughout the years, although Titleist has made exact copies of the Scotty Cameron Newport 2, he says he can tell the difference and has never put another one into play. In 1999, he began using at the Byron Nelson Championship and it is the identical putter, except for changing the grip.

Including 13 major championships, he won 63 times and earned more than $83 million, during that span on the PGA Tour. No piece of sports equipment could be more valuable.

Because of the relative slowness of the greens at the Old Course, Woods is switching to another putter at the Open Championship.

Woods said, “It comes off faster, who on these greens … I’ve always struggled on slower greens. I haven’t had to make that much of an adjustment because the ball is coming off a little bit quicker.”

Nike Method putter will be used by Woods. For Woods, the change is significant, even though to the Titleist model he has been using, the club looks very similar.

Woods said, “It rolls the ball better and rolls it faster; it gets it rolling faster. I’ve had to make very little adjustment in how hard I’m hitting it compared to if I had my old putter. That’s something [caddie Stevie] Williams and I have been talking about over the years together, is what can I do on slower greens? I always seem to struggle on them and can’t wait to get to the fastest greens we play on tour. But this week has been a little bit different.”

In 1997 Masters victory, Woods used a different version of a Cameron putter, and then in 1999, he went to the Titleist model. Gradually he phased Nike equipment into his bag in 2000, even though for all this time, he has held out on the putter. to prepare for the Masters, he began working on his game in March; he practiced extensively with the Nike putter but decided at the last minute to go with his old standby.

The question that arises now is whether he will stick to his new putter and move on or he will go back to the older one.
