Shell Houston Open
The Shell Houston Open is an annual golf tournament that has been played in Houston, Texas, as the Redstone Golf Club, since 1922. This year’s tournament is set to take place from Thursday, April 1 to Sunday, April 4. The purse for this year’s tournament is expected to be near $6 million.
The 2010 version of the Shell Houston Open is highly anticipated as it has one of the best golfer lineups that the event has ever had. Earlier this week, golfers Phil Mickelson and Fred Couples announced that they would participated in the tournament. While Mickelson and Couples are two of the world’s most recognizable golfers, they are just two of the latest names to the list of established golfers.
This tournament is especially important to Couples, as he is an alumnus of the University of Houston. In 2003, Couples became the first Houston alumnus to win the event. Last year, Couples had the lead in the tournament heading into the last 9 holes of the tournament, but eventually lost his lead.
With Mickelson and Couples, the Shell Houston Open now has 6 of the world’s 11 highest ranking golfers on their commitment list. The tournament has already lined up Lee Westwood, Paul Casey, Ernie Els, Padraig Harrington, and Roy McElroy. Paul Casey won last year’s tournament and took home over $1 million.
The tournament has also received commitments from Angel Cabrera and Lucas Glover. Cabrera won the 2009 Masters in Augusta, GA, and Glover won the 2009 US Open.
